Primary Key for Asset

Primary Key for Asset

The primary key of an asset is the resource name which is FQDN or the IP address of a particular asset

as we know that an IT asset might be networked and might be not
for example, if we have a local printer which is connected to a PC, SD will not be able to discover it via network or via Active Directory

sometime, an IT asset is stored, on other word, it is not joined to the Domain nor network, so, SD will not be able to discover it. This will lead to an inaccurate data in the inventory system

usually, when the IT asset deliver to an IT dept, it goes first to the inventory team for registering it in the inventory system and after that it goes to maintenance group for installing the default image of the organization and then to the store
while the asset is in store, it is not registered in Inventory and we can't add it manually since the inventory guy doesn't know what will be the name of this asset and if he gives it a name, it may change later and this will make duplication on the database

therefore, it is recommended to make the serial number (service tag) of an IT asset as primary key, so later if the asset name chanaged, the changes will be applied to the name without creating new asset

Primary key should be unique key

this should be applied as well to the user
instated of making the name as primary key, Badge or employee ID should be the primary key

thanks
