Post XPsp3+IE7 patches not downloading

Let me start off by saying that the new native service pack deployment menu is a nice feature to have in DC and works flawlessly. But, after upgrading my test machines to sp3 and IE7, there are about 30-40 more critical Windows Updates that need to be installed.
DC will not download the necessary updates to the patch db automatically nor when I try a manual download. The configuration for the download sits and spins its wheels.
I feel much progress has been made up to this point but I do require assistance troubleshooting this issue. Our DC box has an all access pass at the firewall so I don't know where else the problem would lie other than the prog itself.
