Re-installation of DC on a PC results in DC reporting the PC as :
"VM-"<computer name>.
I have been testing uninstalling/reinstalling the DC Agent and changing workgroup names via DC. We do not have AD available for these PCs.
I have not worked out the exact sequence of steps required to repeat this renaming but I have seen it several times. I relate it to DC not always tracking a workgroup name change, duplicate creation of computer entries in DC (one for each of 2 workgroups for the PC), using DC to remove the older duplicate when it reports the Agent is Installed, uninstalling the DC Agent from the PC using Programs & Features, and reinstalling DC on the PC.
I have also seen Automatic removal of the DC Agent on the PC which I think was tasked by DC when the computer was removed in the DC Console. This is what I expected but I think the task should only execute if the DC Agent install date and time were from BEFORE the date and time the PC was removed in DC. Since I am testing repeatedly in the same day, this showed up.
So, how long does DC keep track of a PC removal?
Is the "VM-" meant to refer to "Virtual Machine-"?
Interesting that I should find these.
