Password Manager Pro Upgrade fails

When trying to apply a service pack to our Password Manager Pro installation, I get:

Some exception occurred during previous patch installation / uninstallation. Please contact support team.

Aside from my frustration at the simple unhelpfulness of that message, how do I resolve this?

Current version is 8500, trying to go to 8600.
