oversensitive ping check

Good Morning , I have a problem where servers will bounce up and down according to appman but are stable when you look at the machine . I have run in parallel with appman monitoring two simple ping tests with outputs to the same machines. I waited for appman to next say the server was down and then checked my ping tests. surprise surprise the server was responding. my question is how do I tone down or reduce the sensitivity of the ping test ? I have been looking through the admin mods you can make but ping does not seem to be one you can efect. I currently have polls before critical to 3 and clear to 1 but it still seems to alert. please help as this is making monitoring alerts meaningless.
