OpManager MSP... Mibs, Features and monitors.

Hi Guys

Need some help here. Whilst Ive studied TCPIP, SNMP etc a few years back, it appears Im quite rusty on MIB's. We are using Opmanager MSP (which has no MIB Browser at the central store.. only on the probe).

I do have an understanding of what a MIB is, how it relates to SNMP, how it queries devices, traps etc etc

What I do feel is lacking is my understanding of how, where and the related processes of importing MIBS into MSP.

e.g. We have a customers site with a Xerox 8550 printer. OpManager just sees this as a basic printer and so only gives the resource monitor for "Pages Printed". However, I know that with the full Xerox MIB, I should be able to monitor Ink Level etc etc.... So when I go to download the Xerox Mib http://ftp.xerox.com/pub/drivers/MIBs/ I find there are about 10 files in the zip, which all seem required to query different aspects of a device.

So, taking this 1 example:

1. Do I have to compile all those MIBs into 1 file? How?

2. Once they are compiled (or not) where do I install those MIBs? Central Server, Probe? Assumedly in the MIB Directory?
3. If its not the Central Server, can something be done about this, as I dont fancy having to manually install mibs at each customers site. I would rather do it 1 time and 1 time only, then have the relevant MIB deployed from the central server. Its just saving lots of time. (I want a fire and forget product, not, rinse shampoo and repeat).

4. As you then have to build custom monitors (which will assumedly be stored in the database) could you develop a feature within OpManager for Import/Exporting the fully created "MIB, and Custom Monitors" to a package file of some variety. In essence, this would allow everyone out there in the OpManager community, who has built up these MIBS and monitors, to upload them to a central store where not only could you yourselves benefit from a more diverse product set, but so could everyone else, and then allow other people the option, to download a small package file, for their product, with MIBs and Custom monitors already created!

5. If you are not keen on the idea within point 4, then would you re-open http://lounge.opmanager.com/viewtopic.php?t=659 created back in 2005 and have a big push on at least the larger vendors products MIB's being fully installed e.g. Hewlett Packard Proliant range etc. HP have a huge set of monitors available (Just look at HP SIM). I feel OpManager would greatly benefit from such additions.

6. If none of this makes any sense, can you point me to an idiots guide, on the interenet, or perhaps one you guys would speak with me on the phone to explain the MIB import process for OpManager.

Cheers

Will
