New Problem With Custom Views.

Some months ago I created a number of custom view in requests. These were working fine and we have been using since go-live two weeks ago.
I updated a view today to reflect a new application launched today. The addition was roughly "OR If sub-category contains Symphony". However when I saved and the selected this view I received a long list of calls and a series of messages relating to rendering, under the request view headings eg subject.
I have therefore deleted the view and tried to recreate.
However: It seems that something has changed. If, when creating a view, I select eg Department contains, I should be able to enter free form text. Now I receive a list of all departments, like I would get for "department is". I know that this is not how SDP used to function since I have existing view that do contain free form entries.
Is this a known issue with one of the recent service packs?
does anybody have the same issue?
