Network Rediscovery how does it work?

I'm just looking at the OpManager 5.5 product and am quite impressed so far. I have downloaded the 10 device free version, added a server, a router, 2 different brand switches and like what I have seen so far.
One setting that concerns me is the rediscovery option. It seems that the maximum the rediscovery can be set for is 15 days.
When OpManager performs a rediscovery, does it just rediscover known devices or does it try to discover devices on the network range it knows about? Can I turn it off?
Being burned in the past with various network discovery products creating system outages, I'd like to retain tight control on when and how discovery processes are implemented.
