Network device interface utilisation

A couple of questions about moniting a network device interface utilisation. The first one is to ask how the traffic graph data is collected, is done using the 5 minute average data available for the router, OR, is it done the way cricket does it, which is to get the total number of bits and substract from that the last total number of bits?
Second, the interface utilisation graph only shows the size of the traffic that has passed through the interface, is it possible to show in the same way, the number of packets per second. This can be useful in tracking down certain problems (such as a virus riddled machine scanning - low bandwidth, high number of packets).
