Monitoring VPNs using the MSP version

I'm trialling the MSP version of the software (which is going well) but have a questions regarding the monitoring of VPNs.
We have a number of customer sites and I have installed a probes at these sites. Even though we have VPNs to the sites, I have set up the central server and probes to communicate over the internet - I've done this so that if the VPN is down, the probe can still communicate.
What I'd then like to do is monitor the status of the VPNs from the central server (I have installed a probe at the central location as well). I can't seem to find a way to do this. If I try and add the remote firewall address of the VPN as a device to the central probe nothing happens - I assume this is because its on a network that is already being monitored by a remote probe.
Is there any way to monitoring these VPNs centrally? All it really needs is a ping check across the VPN but I can't seem to acheive this.
