Monitoring a tape back up process with Opmanager MSP

Is there anyone out there who has had experience with Opmanager monitoring tape back up process using Arcserve or Backup Exec. Whilst we cant monitor the device or the software directly we are looking at monitoring the error codes that are written to the event logs by the back up software. We will essentially search for a few different error codes and then create a message based on the error codes.
Does anyone have a better idea of doing this because our solution is not very elegant
