monitor a string value (and not integer)

We are testing OpManager in order to replace our monitoring plateform...
We have seen that it is possible to configure threshold to generate an alarm...But unfortunately, this threshold can only be an integer value.
Several OID send string values and not integer values. We would like to monitor an oid which sends back a string value and send an alarm when the device sends the empty string "" or the string "error".
Is it possible to do that maybe via the configuration files?
