I've used Manage Engine's Desktop Central Pro (MEDCP) for almost a decade, in different institutions where I've recommended it and migrated from Microsoft's proprietary Systems Management Server to MEDCP. I LOVE IT, evangelize about it, and so the people that I've left it to manage after I'm gone...!
However, we've noticed that MEDCP's "Server" is built using a combination of Java and other Open Source components; not so the Workstations-OS specific add-ons. Therefore, at first glance, one would assume that MEDCP could be made "Host Server OS independent" (notice the quotes, meaning that I don't know all that this would involve). In theory, a Host OS that runs Java, Apache, MySQL/Postgres and the other stuff that is "VISIBLE" in a MEDCP "Server" should run on any OS that supports the aforementioned; in theory.
I suppose that the main reason that Manage Engine doesn't support MEDCP atop other "Host OS's" is because of support issues - it's easier to support a server that runs atop a determined OS than support MEDCP running atop WinBlows, Mac OS X, and 100's of different Linux distros/variations/configurations.
Am I right on this...?
