Mail not Feching Exchange 2003

Hello
We are using Exchange 2003 and we have enabled the user account with POP. I keep getting the following message when I save, "Failure E-mail setting saved successfully. But error occurred while trying to check connection with mail server - problem connecting to mailbox"
The outgoing is fine with the same account details.
The software is installed on a virtal server.
