log monitor ?

 I tried to set up a file monitor using the File/Directory monitor.  It doesn't seem to work.  All it tells me is that the resource is down, but it isn't.  There is a file there.  It just can't reach it.  this is a remote server.  I put in the userid/passwork and ssh.  How can I debug an error like this.  The file is there. 


Is there any more detailed documentation besides the User Guide?
