Issues adding a Cisco Catos based switch to NCM

I'm trying to add a Cisco Catalyst 6509 to OpManager & NCM. The device is discovered correctly when I add it to OpManager but it fails to add to NCM even though the tick box to add to NCM is ticked. when I try to add it to manually all goes OK at first. I can select the correct vendor & device template (Cisco CatOS switch) etc but on the next screen when I come to select protocol I only get the options of "Telnet-tftp" or "ssh-tftp" - The device is only accessible by telnet. I have created a credential profile for the switch that looks for the ")" for the prompt as the TACACS UserID goes straight into enable mode so the actual switch prompt comes back as "switch_name (enable)". when I select "save & Test" the results all come back as failed. The switch is the same one the OpManager server is connected to although in a different vlan. The MSFC in the switch routes between the vlan the switches management Ip is in and the vlan that the OpManager server is in. So no firewalls present or Access lists on any of the interfaces/switch ports.
