Is it possible to use a Custom Trigger to update request template information?

Is it possible to use a Custom Trigger to update request template information?

I have made a Python script that will look for the customer's email domain and use the API to assign the ticket to the appropriate group. This particular script works fine.

I've tried to use the API to update a field within the request template, but it does not seem to do anything.
