Inventory issue - hardware transition

Inventory issue - hardware transition

Gents, I see the following issue in inventory. I think, it's a typical issue in many companies.

For example, you have two identical laptops: box1 and box2.

Box1 is broken (for example, LCD crack). You need quickly fix user's issue. You move hdd from box1 to box2.

User is happy, but you are not happy with a mess in the Inventory.

What you will see in the inventory.

You will see two laptops: box1 and box2. Box2 is the same, there is no any changes, because no any hardware scan.

After Asset Explorer scan, box1 will have the same name. But ServiceTag/hardware/etc will be changed to box2. You will see hardware changes in the history. But if you will search any details about box1 by the Service Tag (i.e. serial number from the back of the laptop), you will not find this computer in the Inventory. I.e. you will lose all details about box1.

If you have laptop and need to find history by this hardware, you have only Serial Number from the back (field Service Tag in the SD).

If you will put a new hdd into box1 and name it as box11, you will see a new name box11 in the Inventory, but all history details will be lost (who was owner of this laptop before, when bought, purchase order, etc) because these details exist in the history of the box1.

Would be nice to see the following changes in the SD.

1. Search by history in the Inventory

2. HDD transition should work without hardware changes in the Inventory. If you move hdd from box1 to box2, only box2 record should be changed, box1 should be the same. You should identify a box by ServiceTag, not ComputerName. ServiceTag should not be changed at all of the item. History should be by ServiceTag, because you need to know history of the changes on this box by its ServiceTag. Computer can be renamed, OS can be overwritten several times.

Try testing that in your test lab.

Sorry if my explanation is not clear.
