I imagine grouping of interfaces per the service they support is a very cool idea to be available in the system.

 

Scenario 1.

A network with multivendor WAN links would benefit from the monitoring and reporting of the interface availability (to mean the WAN link availability) This will help in the mangement of business SLA.

 

Scenario 2.

a LAN Switch can have specific ports configured for specific VLANs to mean a department, business function etc. it would be therefore usefult to manage and report on a group of the switchports for business use.
