Installing ServiceDesk under linux

I'm trying to install ServiceDesk under linux, but it seems to get stuck searching for the java virtual machine. is it mandatory to have java installed before installing servicedesk? If I'm using a web hosting that doesn't have Java in it, is there a way I can still have Servicedesk installed?
