GA Release Feedback - Few Problems
We've deployed OpManager 7 in our production environment with a degree of success, but not without considerable time and effort to complete. Here is what we ran into:
1. Interface is indeed much improved, although at times inconsistent. It'd make more sense moving Active Directory as additonal tabs rather than another whole block under the device details.
2. Interface is much slower than 6. We are running OpManager on a dual P3 1.4Ghz with 2 GB RAM windows 2003 box with only antivirus running on it. The processor never spikes more than a handful of times during the day, which doesn't explain the slowness the interface has. Especially when bringing up maps or changing details in the device (like changing the display name takes 1 minute to update).
3. Discover networks is missing - so I cannot delete networks or unmanage networks.
I performed a subnet scan of just servers yesterday (x.x.x.1 - x.x.x.99) and it appears a background discovery was made as all the desktops showed up this morning (x.x.x.100-.200). In version 6, I simply turned off re-discovery as a global option which I cannot find in the admin interface.
In the discovery process, it found all the other subnets on our network which we don't require monitoring. So, how do we delete those subnets or turn off managing? In version 6, I went to discover networks and turned that off. Can't find it in version 7.
Recommend adding a "maps" or "networks" back to the admin area so this can be managed.
4. After discovery, we had devices in one subnet (x.102.32.0) show up in another subnet (x.50.32.0). It would have been simple to just move these devices to the other subnet. Doesn't appear to be an option for that. Only recourse was to delete and re-add, which is very inconvenient as we had to resetup thresholds and profiles.
5. Performing 2 subnet discoveries over VPN tunnels took near 8 hours to complete. That was most suprising as we were trying to make changes as we go, but it was clear doing so was having a negative effect on OpManager as, my perception was, work was still be done in the background. For version 6, we did our entire 33-subnet network in 1 day.
6. Last - I went to online help and it's still version 6. Not cool. You guys should have completed the help documentation BEFORE launching the product to GA. Because now I don't have reference material to go on forcing me to write this forum post.
Overall, I like what I am seeing, definately steps in the right direction. Just some key critical details need to be fixed (or clarified) for this to be recommended for upgrade from 6.
