Force agent check in via cmd prompt or script

In the most recent updates of Endpoint Central, specifically EC Cloud, what is the method to force agent to check in and apply configurations?   I understand one method is for end user to right click tray icon and select "apply configurations".  

Is there a way for admin remotely to do it?  I've read in old threads that you can cd to bin folder in EC folders and then run "cfgupdate.exe"  is this still valid or is there some other method?  

Lastly, I think you should actually add a button option in the EC portal that says "agent check in" on each pc and that way you can force it manually right there.   There are times that an important update needs to go out like a script or reg key, and even when using "deploy immediately" it does not seem to reliably do it quickly.
