File System Monitor Question

I'd like to monitor lots of folders on our file server looking over a period of time at growth and trending. I tried to set it up, but, it didn't work. In the scenerio below, please let me know if it is possible to monitor these folders:
ServerA has a windows Share called 'Data' (Share permissions set for Everyone). Under Data are 100 Sub-folders that are not shared, but, NTFS permissions are assigned. I'd like to monitor the sub-folders for space.
I tried setting up the monitor using local server and remote server. Also, tried using a path like \\hostname\data\folder1, but, it didn't work.
Also note, the file server is not where appmanager is installed, hence I tried using remote server option.
So, can these sub-folders on our remote file server be monitored?????
