Extended Security Updates (ESU) for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 - Year 3 support

Extended Security Updates (ESU) for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 - Year 3 support

Hello everyone,

Microsoft has announced it's final leg of the Extended Security Updates (ESUs) support for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008.

Versions ESU Support remaining Start and End date
Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 7 Professional for Embedded SystemsFinal year of support (3rd year)January 12, 2022 to  January 10, 2023
Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, Windows Server 2008 SP2, Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 for Embedded Systems and Windows Server 2008 SP2 for Embedded Systems if running on Microsoft AzureOne more additional year of support February 14, 2023 to January 9, 2024

For organizations that are running the above mentioned legacy applications or those that have not yet migrated completely to a current supported versions, Extended Security Updates (ESUs) are the only method of ensuring protection from threats. Many organizations have already migrated to the latest versions, but for those who are at the end of your 2nd year ESU support and wish to continue it for another year, here's all that you need to know

Year 2 and Year 3 coverage for ESU

Two main things to note is that:

  • You will need to purchase the third year of ESU coverage separately and activate a new key on each applicable device in order for your devices to continue receiving security updates in 2022

  • If your organization did not purchase the first, second, and third year of ESU coverage, you will need to purchase Year 1, Year 2, and Year 3 ESU for your applicable Windows 7 or Windows Server devices before installing and activating the Year 3 MAK keys to receive updates.

The steps to install, activate, and deploy ESUs are the same for first-, second-, and third-year coverage.

For more details regarding these updates, refer to Microsoft's community post regarding the same.
