Disappearing Workstations in Assets

Disappearing Workstations in Assets

We use ServiceDesk in conjunction with Desktop Central as our primary asset management repository.  All workstations are scanned automatically and show up in ServiceDesk.  When I go to do a disposal, I find that there are multiple workstations missing from the database.  I have a theory on why this is happening.

Asset A = JoeUser.domain.com

This system is in ServiceDesk.  Let's say that his system gets replaced with a new system.  The new system has the same name as the old system.  When ServiceDesk performs the next scan, it "updates" the existing record with the new serial number, model, but retains the original name.  While this would be correct, the overwrite removes the traces of the original system.

What needs to happen in ServiceDesk, is code that says "if I detect a change in PC Model number, or serial number, but the name is the same, then rename the previous asset to JoeUser.domain.com_OLD, and create a new asset with the newly scanned information.

ServiceDesk has been a great product for ticketing, and we get a lot of value from it.  Unfortunately, if upper management finds out that we are losing track of assets in the system, I will need to shop for another asset management product.
