Running into a bit of an issue here, probably me just being new to Opmanager but I cant work this out at all.

I understand the device templates, so that when you add a device it picks up what it is automatically and places it under that template and applies whatever monitors and thresholds are set in that template.

i.e - Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2012 R2 etc etc

My issue is, I have 100s of servers I want to monitor with different requirements.

I have multiple DCs, Multiple Exchange servers, Multiple SQL servers....the list goes on.

I have created a Category to group them all together based on if its a DC or Exchange but you cant set monitors and thresholds on a category, only the monitoring interval.

Where I run into an issue is with the device template, for example....

I have say 10 DCs in the DC category that are a mix of 2008, 2008 R2, 2012, and 2012 R2. I want to have the same monitors on each device and the same thresholds for all my DCs. But to do this I have to go and change each device template for 2008, 2008 R2 and so on, so keep having to set the same thing over multiple templates.

The issue then arises where I have say 12 Exchange servers in the exchange category which are also a mix of OSs. Because these also fall under the same templates as the DCs they are sharing the same monitors and thresholds as my DC servers. I want to be able to separate this where by I have a template where I can globally set what I want to monitor on my DCs and thresholds. A template where I can set monitors and thresholds globally for the Exchange servers.

Is there a best practice way to do this as at the moment i'm setting monitors and thresholds up on a per device basis. I have only just started with opmanager and have somewhere close to 500 devices too add. I dont want to be doing setting up monitors on a per server basis and want a group for each type as above like DCs, Exchange etc.

Can anyone assist?
