Is it possible to edit a package but still keep the auto update status enabled?

I've found, if I use, say Google Chrome installer and want to add pre and post activities, the auto update status changes to 'Not Applicable'. Is there a way to retain auto updates?

If we alter the package at all, to add checks and such, we end up with 'those' clients forever on the version we install.

Or, is there a way to enable updates on bespoke packages we create (what's in the make-up of those packages that are auto update enabled by default)?

Any advice appreciated.
