Change Password Requires users to re-authenticate (log off/log in) before they can reconnect to Exchange or other apps using AD credentials

We have recently included the link to the Self Service in our password expiry notifications. Users are now using it, however they are calling in, because after changing their password their Outlook and other sessions that use AD crendentials are prompting for password and putting in their new password or old passsword does not work. Even after closing all applications and relaunching they still do not work. The users need to log off of Windows and log back in before they work. Is this normal behavior? It seems clunky for users to have to do that.
