Cannot change SD to use my own mysql DB

I cannot change sd to use my own mysql db. I installed sd and made sure it worked fine. Then i ran the changedbserver.bat and configured it to point at my mysql server. tested the connection and hit save. Now after changing the database i cannot start the sdserver. it crashes with the error

I can telnet on port 3306 from my sd server to the server i have the mysql server and i get a response. What could be wrong?
