BUG----Inventory Audit causes duplicate workstations
My school is running your ServiceDesk (Build 5003). This software is very good because we can remotely scan the software on each computer and control the license. Recently, we've found that every day after auditing, there will be some duplicate workstations. The reason of this duplicate situation could be the information of some workstations is replaced by one workstation which holds the same IP address.
In our school network, we set IP lease time to only 2 hours since we don't have enough IP address. This may cause the problem. Another problem, I guess, may be some bugs in ServiceDesk Inventory Auditing algorithm.
For example, Computer A is having 192.168.0.1 from DHCP server. If Computer A has not powered on for serveral days. 192.168.0.1 is kept in ServiceDesk as IP address for Computer A. During the time of Computer A not being powered on, Computer B may also get 192.168.0.1 from DHCP server because Computer A is not on. Therefore, 192.168.0.1 is also kept in ServiceDesk as IP for Computer B. During inventory audit, your audit logic, I guess, may search by IP address and update the workstation with the same IP. Since Computer B is active in 192.168.0.1, ServiceDesk will also replace information of Computer A by Computer B's. Then we have two Computer B in ServiceDesk and Computer A is missing.
My current solution is to search duplicate workstations manually and delete the IP address of the computers which are not powered on. I don't think it is a good solution. Moreover, it may give incorrect information on software and hardware because the information may belong to another computer.
Could you please check your audit algorithm and make some improvement? Hope I can see some improvement in the next service pack.
