Automated method to disable interface monitoring

We are looking for a way to dynamically assess whether an interface up/down alert (or any interface alert, for that matter) is worth sending to the NOC. For example, if a link to a server gets saturated or goes down, we don't really care, but we do care if an uplink or other critical link is saturated or goes down. We would like an automated way to turn on/off interface monitoring using a script or tool without having to search for the device, find the interface, click configure, and disable the status monitoring. Doing this manually and keeping it current would be a full time job and would still be error-prone.

The API offers nothing to control anything at the interface-level. Has anybody had any success in finding a way to automate something like this?
