assets and workstations, what do i do

when i was using version 6 i largely ignored the workstation bit and focused on assets only.
now i have upgraded to version 7 and all the assets and workstation have been combined i have following issue
1) i have duplicate entries, for each scanned workstation i also have an "old" asset name which is the asset tag label (number range starting at 5000 and up), this is now called the resource name.
2) "old" assets that have been disposed and are marked as disposed do not have a corresponding workstation (as these device are no longer on the network they can no longer be scanned) i do want to keep the "old" assets in my disposed list as they have an asset tag and that way I know what that asset tag (a label with 4 digit numbering in sequence) used to be and who owned it before it got disposed.
3) when purchasing new workstations, i enter the machine type and model numberin the PO, i then receive the items, i assign it an asset tag which also becomes the resource name but when i do a scan of the active directory it creates a duplicate entry again
i have been thinking of a ways to solve issue 1 and 3 (issue 3 i will just live with)
i see 2 options
1) create a new product type called workstation - hardware, assign all the "old" assets to this category and then when you click on workstations you will only see the scanned AD devices, this would take care of all the assets purchased to date
2) if i were to rename the newly purchased workstation to the full workstation name
example:
say I purchase a thinkpad x61s and i receive it and assign it asset tag: 5555
i then build the OS deploy it and put it on my AD, and i call the machine ELBUTREX61S, if i now go to the workstation and rename the resource name from 5555 and change it into ELBUTREX61S and then do the scan will the scan realise i already have an resource name ELBUTREX61S and will it just update this resource with the scanned information??
i am just wondering if anybody else is experiencing a similar issue and or if you have solved this in a different way. what would you suggest
