We are having a number of issues with the inflexibility of the asset management in SDP on-demand, primely with Virtual servers and workstations. We have Desktop central integration and so the asset database is populated via Desktop Central.
We have a large number of Virtual computers, which are a mixture of Workstation and servers. Some of the them have server roles even though they use desktop operating systems. We use part of the computer name to identify the virtual computer as a server or workstation.
Our first issue is that all virtual computers are tagged as Workstations although most are servers.
I created a Virtual Server 'Product Type', and encountered our second issue, Computers that were tagged with the new product Type are no longer treated as computers and so there are no Software or Hardware details.
I then tried creating a dynamic groups to separate the virtual servers and workstations, however It is not possible to use the computer name as a filter.
I have three suggestions that would make classifying and managing asset a lot simpler.
1. Have built-in product Types for Virtual Workstations and Servers that will gather and store hardware and software details (there really should be a easy way to separate physical and virtual assets).
2. Use the OS to initially classify an assert as a Server or workstation (which would greatly reduce the need for manual management of the asset database)
3. Allow the use of the computer name to filter dynamic groups (many organisations use the name to indicate location for example - and to have assets group by location makes managing them much easier).
