Any tips on scanning laptops?

Does anyone have any recommended procedures to periodically scan laptops. They can be often disconnected from the local network or turned off, making scanning via active directory not work. Still, it would be VERY useful to periodically scan them. This must often come up and I hope someone has already figured out some bright ways to deal with this.
