Alert notification sounds don't work

Having installed the free version of OpManager on a test machine, I found that I had to reinstall Java after installing OpManager to get the alert notification sounds to work - but now, installing it on the machine intended to be used as a network monitor, this doesn't seem to work!
Should the sound function work right 'out of the box', or do I need to copy / run something before they will work? (Also, is there any way to get a sound to loop until the alert is cleared?)
