Sadly, ManageEngine still hasn't moved forward on the Office 365 user management and deployment within ADManager Plus. Creating basic ‘cloud’ based users with a mailbox, just about works.But as many enterprise users amongst us we have a more enhanced setup which isn’t supported by the current version of AD Manager Plus. At the moment our setup includes a directory sync solution syncing our on-premise AD towards Azure AD, ADFS for single sign-on and a Hybrid Exchange 2013 Server to administrate the mailboxes and other Exchange objects.

While you can use the Exchange admin center to create new AD users with an Office 365 mailbox it supersedes all the work we did the last years in AD Manager using templates and applying standards across our organization. Which is and was our main objective and reasoning behind to for the ManageEngine AD Manager Plus application.

I’ve started with a simple script that ran directly after the user was created in AD, first running a DirSync and then executing some remote mailbox PowerShell cmd’s. Although this direct approach was causing issue’s as the deployment of users within the Microsoft Cloud services is not always as instant as you would like. So now we put in a system that delays the creation with 15 minutes, between when the account is created in AD Manager and synced and when the actual mailbox is created and Office 365 configurations are applied. This ensures that all the work in the backend is completed within Microsoft cloud services, and the mailbox (normal, shared or resource) is correctly created.
