(bps != kbps != Mbps) = Messed up Utilization reports

(bps != kbps != Mbps) = Messed up Utilization reports

Hello,

I'm new to the software and testing it out for evaluation purposes. First let me start off by saying this software is awesome. I'm very excited about what I have seen thus far.

I have a question on how you calculate bps, kpbs, Mbps etc. with regards to entering in "IP Group Speed"...

I'm setting up a new IP Group Management for one of our locations that has a VPN that comes back through the router I'm monitoring. There is a field that says "IP Group Speed (this value will be used for calculation):" which I'm filling in with the locations bandwidth. It is asking for this data in bps. I am entering in 131072 bps, which should correlate to a 128kbps circuit (see the following URL for conversion proof) -> www.google.com/search?hl=&cat=&meta=&num=&ie=utf-8&q=131072+bits+to+kilobits. However, when viewing the Utilization information for this IP Group, your software is reporting this as "131.07 Kbps". It looks to me like you took the bps and just divided it by 1000 instead of 1024 (a kilobit).

I noticed this same type of issue with the line speed of the serial 1/0 interface on our router. If I click on "Edit Interface Properties" for the serial device, it says "1536000 bps" which is pulled from the SNMP information. However, when I go to the utilization report for the serial interface, it is listed as "1.53 Mbps". This of course is not correct for a number of reasons. First off, the SNMP service is reporting 1536 Kilobits, which is actually 1,572,864 bits, not 1,536,000 bits. Second, 1,536,000 bits is actually 1.464 megabits, not 1.53 megabits. www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=1536000+bits+in+megabits&btnG=Search.

Unless I'm way off track here and don't know my bits from my kilobits from my megabits, I'd say you have some arithmetic problems in your conversions. I noticed in the forums that a lot of people are reporting results where they have more then 100% utilization. While I understand this can occur due to bursting by the ISP, I'm now wondering how much of this is occurring due to in-correct arithmetic?

Because of this, I'm not sure what I should enter in to get the appropriate utilization report? If I change the interface and IP Groups to report the correct Kbps or Mbps by putting in the incorrect bps, that does not mean that you are not still in-correctly calculating the information coming from the NetFlow in the first place.

I look forward to your response,
