Definition — What is Thin Client?


The Thin Client is a lightweight computer, sometimes called a lean client.  Thin Clients are viable alternatives to regular PCs. It may have very limited resources of its own. They do not have hard drives, auxiliary drives, and I/O ports. Since they do not have hard drives, thin clients do not have any software installed on them. Instead, they run programs and access data from a server.


Significance of Thin Clients:
  • Thin Clients are more suitable in a business environment where graphics are not required. That's the major reason, it is most commonly found in organizations like BPOs, Call centers, etc.
  • Thin clients are perfect for policy centric and secured business environments, it restricts users from installing any software, users have to stick with the standard set of tools that is available on the server. It makes way for easier maintenance and the environment become more stable.
  • Popular research state that Thin client requires much less electricity than a desktop PC, it uses only 8 to 10 watts on average, while a desktop computer uses 150 watts.
