Secure Socket Layer

Definition — What is SSL?

SSL stands for "Secure Socket Layer" It is a standard technology that encrypts communication between users and a website, SSL is required to run any web application on Https. The technology has a hidden layer of encryption that safeguards any sensitive data (like password, credit card information, or any online transaction, etc..) that's transferred between two systems. Even though TLS (Transport Layer Security) is the cryptographic protocol successor of SSL, most people still refer to this type of technology as ‘SSL’.

Simple ways to identify if a website is secured:

  • If the website URL has Https, it indicates the particular web page is secured with SSL encryption

  • On clicking the padlock on the website URL, shows certificate details of the particular website.
